Wild card Torres stuns his way into Estoril quarter-finals, Darderi and Rublev move forward

Wild card Tiago Torres continued his fairy-tale week at the Millennium Estoril Open, the world No. 427 beating Chilean seed No. 3 Alejandro Tabilo 6-4, 6-4 to reach his first ATP Tour quarter-final, where he will face Frenchman Hugo Gaston for a place in the semi-finals.

Results elsewhere set up two more of the four last-eight ties. Top seed Andrey Rublev cruised past Kazakh lucky loser Timofey Skatov 6-1, 6-1 in just 59 minutes and next faces Frenchman Luca Van Assche, who ended eighth seed Pablo Carreno Busta’s run 6-3, 4-6, 6-2.

Italian seed No. 2 Luciano Darderi beat Spanish qualifier Pedro Martinez 6-0, 6-1 and will play Portuguese home favourite Jaime Faria, who saw off Peruvian qualifier Gonzalo Bueno 6-2, 6-4.

The win stretched his run to five straight since claiming the Bastad title last weekend and puts him into his 89th tour-level quarter-final, seventh of the season.

Torres, playing in his first ATP Tour main draw at 24, has now beaten a former world No. 20 in Nikoloz Basilashvili and a top-30 seed in Tabilo on home soil, while Skatov, who came through qualifying, is bidding to become just the fourth lucky loser to reach the last eight in the event’s history.

Van Assche, for his part, is 0-3 in career quarter-finals and chasing a maiden tour-level semi-final, while Carreno Busta’s wait for a first quarter-final since Winston-Salem in 2024 continues.

Faria, up nine places to No. 79 on the PIF ATP Live Rankings, is into his second quarter-final of the season after Rio de Janeiro in February. He will need to get past Darderi, who arrives on the back of consecutive finals in Buenos Aires and Bastad last week and is tied with Alexander Zverev for the most clay-court wins on tour this season. Should Faria come through, it would mark just the fourth time two Portuguese men have reached the same ATP Tour quarter-final.
