Corentin Moutet booked a high-stakes third-round date with world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz after American qualifier Michael Zheng was forced to retire due to a left thigh injury on Wednesday night. Following a week of grueling tennis, the 21-year-old Zheng’s body finally gave way while trailing 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, 2-0, ending one of the tournament’s most courageous qualifying runs.
The match began in Zheng’s favor, with the world No. 174 racing to a 3-0 lead and securing the opening set 6-3. However, the physical toll of his five-set, first-round upset over Sebastian Korda became apparent early in the second set. Moutet, the 32nd seed, stepped up his intensity to level the match with a clinical 6-1 set, capitalizing on Zheng’s diminishing mobility.
Alcaraz – Moutet next
The drama peaked at the start of the third set when Zheng took a medical timeout for treatment on his left quad and thigh area. Despite returned to the court with a visible limp, the American showed a final flash of defiance. At 2-0 down, he managed to break Moutet back to reach 2-1. During that game, a focused Moutet even attempted an underarm serve at 15-all, but Zheng’s grit allowed him to survive the game and stay competitive momentarily.
Ultimately, the lack of movement proved insurmountable. Moutet regained control to take the third set 6-3 and was leading 2-0 in the fourth when Zheng made the difficult decision to pull out. Moutet, who has now matched his career-best result in Melbourne, moves on to face Alcaraz in what promises to be a battle of tactical variety. For Zheng, despite the retirement, his run from the qualifiers to the second round—including the scalp of Korda—marks him as a significant talent to watch in 2026.
