Australian Open: Pegula untroubled by Mertens, reaches third round

American Jessica Pegula, the No 7 seed, moved into the third round of the Australian Open by winning against Belgian Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-2 at Melbourne Park on Wednesday.
Pegula, ranked No 6, will play Serb Olga Danilovic next.
The American defeated Australian wildcard Maya Joint (6-3, 6-0) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round of the first Grand Slam tournament of the 2025 season, Mertens, ranked No 34, edged out Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic (4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-4).
