J.J. Wolf advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open by beating lucky loser Michael Mmoh (6-4, 6-1, 6-2) at Melbourne Park on Saturday night. In the previous rounds, Mmoh, ranked No 107, produced a stunning comeback to beat Frenchman Laurent Lokoli (4-6, 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4, 6-2) and then pulled the upset against German Alexander Zverev, the No 12 seed (6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-3, 6-2).

Wolf (24yo) and Mmoh (25yo) had never faced each other on the Tour before that match but had played against each other twice at the Challenger level with Wolf winning both times. It will be Wolf’s first time in the fourth round of a Grand Slam, after getting twice to the third round (US Open 2020 and 2021).

Wolf, ranked No 67, will now face the winner of the match between Australian wildcard Alexei Popyrin and American Ben Shelton next. In the previous rounds, J.J. Wolf edged out Australian Jordan Thompson (6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5) and won against Argentinian Diego Schwartzman, the No 23 seed (6-1, 6-4, 6-4) ahead of his victory.
