Yulia Putintseva delivered a clinical performance on Wednesday night, defeating France’s Elsa Jacquemot 6-1, 6-2 to reach the third round of the Australian Open. The world No. 105 needed just over an hour to dismantle her younger opponent, maintaining the momentum from her thrilling first-round upset of world No. 14 Beatriz Haddad Maia.

The match was a stark contrast to Jacquemot’s opening-round marathon. The 22-year-old Frenchwoman had previously made history by winning the tournament’s first-ever triple-tiebreak match against the 20th seed Marta Kostyuk, but the physical toll of that 3.5-hour battle appeared evident on Court 7. Putintseva, an experienced quarterfinalist at multiple majors, gave Jacquemot no room to breathe, using her trademark variety and baseline aggression to break the Frenchwoman five times across two dominant sets.

Putintseva’s AUSSIE 3RD ROUND in her career

Putintseva’s victory marks the fifth time in her career she has reached the round of 32 in Melbourne, equaling her best performance at the Australian Open. Having already dispatched a top-15 seed earlier in the week, the Kazakh is now emerging as one of the dangerous floaters in a section of the draw that has opened up following the early exits of major seeds like Haddad Maia and Kostyuk.

Next for Putintseva is a meeting with the tournament’s breakout star, Zeynep Sönmez. The Turkish qualifier, who made international headlines by rescuing a fainted ball girl during her first-round upset of Ekaterina Alexandrova, continued her dream run on Wednesday by defeating Anna Bondár 6-2, 6-4. The upcoming clash promises to be a high-stakes encounter, with both players eyeing a career-first fourth-round appearance in Melbourne.
