Novak Djokovic wept on his chair at 1-3 in the fifth set and lost a Grand Slam first round for the first time since January 2006, beaten 7-6 (5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 by Mariano Navone after four hours and 40 minutes. Afterwards he said the vomiting and cramping have followed him through almost every match of 2026, and that he does not know if it can be fixed.

The US Open has lost the No. 19 seed before it began, Casper Ruud withdrawing with a back injury picked up training in New York after a practice session on Thursday collapsed inside an hour. Marin Cilic is out too, and two lucky losers, Arthur Gea and Otto Virtanen, inherit their first-round matches.
