Luciano Darderi will play the Davis Cup Final 8 in Bologna with Italy, after captain Filippo Volandri gave him his first call-up. The world No. 23 joins Flavio Cobolli, Lorenzo Musetti and doubles players Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori in the squad.
Matteo Berrettini was left out of the team. Jannik Sinner, out for the rest of the season with knee inflammation, will not play in Bologna. Darderi had said in October that he was ready to play if called.
Born in Argentina, Darderi always chose Italy
Darderi was born in Villa Gesell, Argentina. In March, he dispelled speculation that he could switch to his native country for the Davis Cup, saying he wanted to compete for Italy.
The 24-year-old reached a career-high No. 16 in May. He won the fifth title of his career in Santiago in February, beating Yannick Hanfmann 7-6 (6), 7-5 in the final.
Before Bologna, Darderi opens at the Rolex Paris Masters against a qualifier. The winner will face Novak Djokovic or Valentin Vacherot in the second round.
