Carlos Alcaraz will not play for Spain in the Davis Cup in Valencia next week, he has confirmed.
Following his defeat to Daniil Medvedev in the semi-final of the US Open, the 20-year-old posted on his social media accounts (in Spanish, quotes translated by Tennis Majors): “I have to listen to my body after a very long tour. I need to stop and rest, physically and mentally. The schedule is very demanding, there is still a lot of season left, and now it is time to recharge.”
He will be replaced in the team by Albert Ramos Vinolas as Spain seek a place in this year’s Final Eight.
Alcaraz has suffered some physical issues over the last year, notably the cramps that hindered him during the Roland-Garros final. He missed the Australian Open due to a right leg injury, pulled out of Acapulco due to a right leg tear, and withdrew from Monte-Carlo with a left-hand problem and discomfort in his back.
He finished his season last year early due to an abdominal tear.
