Murray joins Federer and Nadal in Europe Avengers assemble for Laver Cup

Murray says he is excited to team up with both Federer and Nadal for Team Europe in the Laver Cup which will be held in his hometown London this year

Three-time Major winner Andy Murray will join Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in representing Team Europe at the Laver Cup later this year.

This will be the first time that Murray will compete at the Laver Cup, an annual event between Team Europe and Team World.

“I’m looking forward to playing the Laver Cup in London,” Murray said. “I love playing as part of a team and there is a great atmosphere and intensity to the event. I’ve heard lots of good things and I’m excited to be teaming up with both Roger and Rafa for Team Europe.”

The news was welcome by Federer, who tweeted Murray’s announcement with the caption “Europe Avengers assemble #teameurope #London”. Federer is scheduled to make his long-awaited return to tennis at the Laver Cup. The Swiss has not played since Wimbledon in 2021 after which he underwent a knee surgery.

Team Europe captain Bjorn Borg was excited to have Murray on his squad, calling the Brit an incredible asset. “I am extremely excited to have Andy on our team,” Borg said. “He is a dedicated, ferocious, and inspirational competitor who has re-established himself at the top of the game. He will be an incredible asset for the home team in both singles and doubles.”

Team Europe has won all four previous editions of the Lave Cup – Prague 2017, Chicago 2018, Geneva 2019, and Boston 2021. The 2022 edition will be held in London and the event will travel to Vancouver in 2023 and Berlin in 2024.

Team World Captain John McEnroe has announced that Felix Auger-Aliassime, Taylor Fritz, and Diego Schwartzman will be part of his squad in 2022.
