Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry moved into the last eight of Roland-Garros by winning against Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka, the No 27 seed, 7-6 (8), 6-0, 6-1 in Paris on Monday evening.

Etcheverry, ranked No 49, is the big surprise of the quarter-finals field. He took the best spot in the lower part of the draw opened by Daniil Medvedev’s early loss. He will play German Alexander Zverev, the No 22 seed.

“I just can’t believe it, it’s a dream come true”, he said on the on-court interview. “It’s important to share this moment with my family and with the crowd. I will recover tonight and be ready for the next battle”

The Argentinian, who was runner-up early this year in Santiago and Houston, defeated three seeds on his road to the quarters. He beat Jack Draper (6-4, 1-0 ret.), Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 18 seed (6-3, 7-6 (2), 6-3) and Croat Borna Coric, the No 15 seed (6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-2) before Nishioka.

Nishioka, ranked No 33, probably paid his time spent on the court. He had to call for the physio during the third set after three five-sets battles during the previous rounds against American J.J. Wolf (1-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3), Australian Max Purcell (4-6, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4) and Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild (3-6, 7-6 (8), 2-6, 6-4, 6-0).
