No 7 seed Madison Keys reached the last 16 of Roland-Garros by edging out No 31 seed Sofia Kenin 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Keys, ranked No 8, will play American Hailey Baptiste next.
Ahead of her victory, Madison Keys beat Australian qualifier Daria Saville (6-2, 6-1) and Katie Boulter (6-1, 6-3).
Kenin, ranked No 30, won against Frenchwoman Varvara Gracheva (6-3, 6-1) and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (7-6 (5), 6-4) earlier in the tournament.
