Roland-Garros: Former world No 8 Schwartzman moves into second round, back from two sets to love

Argentinian Diego Schwartzman overhauled the situation against Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles, the No 32 seed, 1-6, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-0, 6-4 to reach the second round of Roland-Garros at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris on Monday.

“It was a tough match,” Schwartzman admitted in his post-match press conference. “At the beginning he was playing much better than me. I think on the second set I had my chances, and I start to improve my tennis, but I was not playing too many matches, I was losing too many matches the last few months. So at the end of the second set with the chances I didn’t take, maybe the confidence, maybe no rhythm, a few things.

“But I have confidence in five sets, and I think at the start of the third he gave me a few opportunities to keep fighting for the match, and I took it.

“When he started to make some mistakes and struggling with his rhythm, with his intensity, I took the chances. And the fifth was very tough, but I think from the final of the second set, my tennis was very good.”

Schwartzman, ranked No 95, will face Portuguese Nuno Borges next.
