Roland-Garros: Stephens reaches last 16, defeats valiant Parry

American Sloane Stephens advanced to the last 16 of Roland-Garros by defeating Frenchwoman Diane Parry 6-2, 6-3 at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris on Friday evening.

Stephens, ranked No 64, will play Swiss Jil Teichmann, the No 23 seed, next.

Earlier in the tournament, the American won against German qualifier Jule Niemeier (5-7, 6-4, 6-2) and Romanian Sorana Cirstea, the No 26 seed (3-6, 6-2, 6-0).

Parry, ranked No 97, won against Czech Barbora Krejcikova, the second seed (1-6, 6-2, 6-3) and Colombian Maria Camila Osorio Serrano (6-3, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the French Open.
