Roland-Garros: Tsitsipas rolls into quarter-finals to set up last eight meeting with Carlos Alcaraz
Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Sebastian Ofner 7-5, 6-3, 6-0 on Sunday evening. He’ll face Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, in the next round
There were no dramas for Stefanos Tsitsipas in his fourth round match against Sebastian Ofner, as he beat the Austrian qualifier 7-5, 6-3, 6-0 to move into the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros to set up a meeting the Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz.
The first set was a close encounter, with Ofner demonstrating the quality that brought him three wins at this year’s Roland-Garros.
Earlier in the tournament, Ofner, ranked No 118, won against American Maxime Cressy (6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-2), American Sebastian Korda, the No 24 seed (6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-4) and Italian Fabio Fognini (5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4).
But the Greek’s experience came to the fore, breaking in the twelfth and final game to take the opener and nudge ahead.
The second was a more straightforward affair, with Tsitsipas claiming to only break of the set in the sixth game, going on to serve out for a two sets to love lead.
From that point on, there was only one winner as the world No. 5 breezed through the final set without dropping a game.
Tsitsipas has looked sharp in Paris this year as he looks to go one better than the result he recorded in 2021 when he lost to Djokovic in five sets in the final.
The Greek won against Czech Jiri Vesely (7-5, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7)), Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena (6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2) and Argentinian Diego Schwartzman (6-2, 6-2, 6-3) ahead of his victory.
However, he faces a massive test against the world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight. Tsitsipas has lost all four of their previous meetings, and the young Spaniard is in devastating form as he has been all year since returning from injury in February.
