Linda Noskova served for the match at 5-4 in the second set, held two match points, lost the set and won the third anyway to beat Marta Kostyuk 7-5, 5-7, 6-4 on Sunday evening and reach the quarterfinals of the US Open for the first time.
Noskova plays World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka next. The Belarusian, the top seed and two-time defending champion, beat American Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3 earlier on Sunday and has not lost a match at the US Open since the 2023 final.
The 21-year-old Czech, the No. 6 seed, is the reigning Wimbledon champion; Kostyuk, of Ukraine, was the No. 11 seed. It was the second Grand Slam running in which Noskova has ended her tournament, after their Wimbledon semifinal, 6-4, 6-4.
Since April, every one of Kostyuk’s defeats has come against the player who went on to win the title: Mirra Andreeva in the Roland-Garros semifinals, Noskova at Wimbledon, Iga Swiatek in the Toronto fourth round and Coco Gauff in the Cincinnati quarterfinals.
Marta is a huge competitor, so I knew it was gonna be tough since the beginning
“Today was very close. It could’ve ended both ways,” Noskova said after the match. “Marta is a huge competitor, so I knew it was gonna be tough since the beginning. Especially with all the chances I had in the second set. It was still very tough to restart in the third set.”
It is the third match in a row she has won that way. In the Wimbledon final she led Karolina Muchova 6-2, 5-2 and held five match points before losing the second set 7-5 and winning 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. In the third round here she led No. 29 seed Ann Li of the United States 6-2, 5-3, had a match point, lost the second set on a tie-break and won 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-2.
The win was her 11th in succession at Grand Slam level, a run that began with her Wimbledon title, and her eighth of the season against a top-20 opponent. She is the youngest Czech woman to reach the US Open quarterfinals since Daja Bedanova in 2001.
