US Open: 35-year-old Struff knocks out 11th seed Rune in five sets

35-year-old German qualifier Jan-Lennard Struff advanced to the third round of the US Open by beating Dane Holger Rune, the No 11 seed, in a five-set tussle in New York on Wednesday night.
Struff won the high-quality contest 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in a second round clash.
The German, who peaked at No 21 in the rankings in 2023 but is now ranked No 144, will face No 17 seed Frances Tiafoe next.
The 35-year-old won against American Mackenzie McDonald (3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3, 6-3) in his first round main draw match.
In the previous round, Rune, ranked No 11, defeated Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2)).
