US Open: Andreeva stunned by Townsend and Navarro by Krejcikova!
Taylor Townsend won against Mirra Andreeva 7-5, 6-2 on Saturday night. She’ll play Czech Barbora Krejcikova in the next round

The women’s singles draw at the US Open delivered a mix of predictable dominance and shocking surprise on Day 6. While top seeds Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, and Elena Rybakina showed why they are favorites for the title, American Taylor Townsend, ranked No. 143, capped a remarkable week by defeating the No. 5 seed, Mirra Andreeva, 7-5, 6-2.
Townsend’s victory was the major upset of the day, given Andreeva’s consistent and impressive season, which had seen her reach the second week at all three Grand Slams. In her first two matches in Flushing Meadows, the young Russian had been imperious, dropping just five games in total against Anastasia Potapova (6-1, 6-3) and American Alycia Parks (6-0, 6-1).
But Townsend, on the back of a fiery second-round upset of the No. 25 seed Jelena Ostapenko (7-5, 6-1), brought a different level of energy to the court. She hit 23 winners and won 71% of her first-serve points to seal her victory.
Townsend – Krejcikova now
Townsend will now face Czech Barbora Krejcikova in a compelling fourth-round matchup. Krejcikova earned her spot in the last 16 with a hard-fought comeback victory over American Emma Navarro, the No. 10 seed. After dropping the first set, Krejcikova rallied to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, ending the run of one of the home country’s top players. Another notable upset of the day saw former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova eliminate No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini 7-6 (4), 6-1.
Elsewhere, the top seeds showed their class. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka continued her quest for a repeat championship, dispatching Leylah Fernandez 6-3, 7-6 (2). Sabalenka survived a second-set push from the Canadian before cruising through the tiebreak.
Jessica Pegula, the No. 4 seed, delivered a clinical performance, moving past Victoria Azarenka in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Pegula’s form has been rock solid throughout the tournament, and her decisive victory over a three-time U.S. Open finalist underscores her own title ambitions.
In another solid performance, No. 9 seed Elena Rybakina overpowered Emma Raducanu, the 2021 champion, with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory. Rybakina’s potent serve and consistent groundstrokes proved too much for the Brit.
The round of 16 for the bottom half of the draw will be decided on Sunday, as the remaining matches of the third round are scheduled to be played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
