US Open: Baez through to third round as Alves retires in fourth set

Sebastian Baez benefited from the retirement of Meligeni Alves (6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4, 0-0). He’ll face the winner of the match between Medvedev and O’Connell.

Argentinian Sebastian Baez advanced to the third round of the US Open when Brazilian qualifier Felipe Meligeni Alves retired on Thursday night at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Baez, ranked No 32, led 6-7 (7), 6-4, 6-4, 0-0 when Meligeni Alves, ranked No 168, pulled out on Thursday night at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

The 22-year-old Argentinian will face the winner of the match between Russian Daniil Medvedev, the No 3 seed, and Australian Christopher O’Connell next.

Sebastian Baez won against Croat Borna Coric, the No 27 seed (7-5, 7-5, 6-1) ahead of his victory.

In the previous round of the Flushing Meadows tournament, the Brazilian defeated Australian lucky loser James Duckworth (6-4, 7-6 (11), 6-3).
