US Open: Wozniacki continues dream comeback with upset over Kvitova to book spot in third round

Danish wildcard Caroline Wozniacki continued her sparkling comeback on Wednesday evening under the lights at the US Open with an upset win over No 11 seed Petra Kvitova to reach the third round at Flushing Meadows in New York.

The former world No 1 and Grand Slam champion won 7-5, 7-6 (5) for her seventh win in 15 career meetings over Kvitova and will play another player on the comeback trail – the American Jennifer Brady – next.

This is only Wozniacki’s third tournament after her return – she improves to three wins out of five matches since her comeback began at the Canadian Open earlier this month.

In the first round of the Flushing Meadow tournament, the 33-year-old Dane, back after three and a half years during which she had two kids, beat Russian qualifier Tatiana Prozorova (6-3, 6-2).

Kvitova, ranked No 11, won against Spaniard Cristina Bucsa (6-1, 7-6 (5)) in the previous round in New York.
