Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 13 seed, advanced to the third round of the US Open by edging out American Sofia Kenin 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Kenin came out of the blocks quickly, breaking her Russian opponent twice en route to an impressive first set win, taking the opener 6-2.

After then leading in the second set courtesy of an early break, the 2020 Australian Open champion looked on course for a thoroughly impressive straight sets win over the world No 14.

However, a break back from Kasatkina in the middle stanza changed the complexion of the match entirely.

Kasatkina then broke again to take the match into a decider, one that she narrowly edged after a firm resistance from the American finally broke.

Kasatkina, ranked No 14, will face the winner of the match between Belgian qualifier Greet Minnen and American qualifier Sachia Vickery next.

In the previous round of the Flushing Meadow tournament, the Russian won against American Alycia Parks (2-6, 6-4, 6-2).

Kenin, ranked No 101, beat Romanian Ana Bogdan (7-6 (2), 6-4) during the first round of the Flushing Meadow tournament.
