Dutchman Van Rijthoven makes the most of his wild card on Day 1
Tim van Rijthoven defeated Federico Delbonis 7-6 (7), 6-1, 6-2 on Monday evening. He’ll play the winner of the match between Spaniard Carlos Taberner and American Reilly Opelka, the No 15 seed, in the next round
Tim Van Rijthoven stunned the tennis world earlier this summer when he won the ‘s-Hertogebnosch title, defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final to cap a week that saw him win an ATP-level match for the first time.
That effort earned him a main draw wild card into Wimbledon, and on Monday he made sure he used it wisely.
Van Rijthoven, making his Grand Slam debut, defeated Argentinian Federico Delbonis 7-6 (7), 6-1, 6-2 to reach the second round of Wimbledon.
Rijthoven, ranked No 104, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Carlos Taberner and American Reilly Opelka, the No 15 seed, next.
