“Everyone gets excited when David Beckham is around!” Wimbledon welcomes football legend

English football legend David Beckham was a special guest at Wimbledon on Wednesday, as he has been on several occasions over the years – and the players were very excited to see him.

Jodie Burrage – making her debut on Centre Court in a losing effort to Daria Kasatkina – said afterwards that the experience of playing in front of a sporting icon was rather daunting.

“I obviously saw David Beckham was announced: ‘Oh my God, David Beckham is watching me play tennis right now!'” she beamed.

“I think everyone gets excited when David Beckham is around. Yeah, he’s just an incredible person. He’s done a lot. Yeah, it was a privilege to have him watching me today.”

And noted football fan Ons Jabeur – who talked on Tuesday about how her love of grass began with that sport rather than tennis – got a few photos with the man himself, which she shared on social media.

“A pleasure and an honour to meet David Beckham, thank you for this inspiring moment,” she wrote.
