Day five at Wimbledon 2023 was not one to remember for British tennis, with Andy Murray, Cam Norrie and Liam Broady all exiting the men’s draw.

With no more British men remaining in Wimbledon 2023, Liam Broady has come out with a surprising statement on the state of British tennis in his post-match comments.

“I think the men’s is obviously in a fantastic state at the moment,” declared Broady, on a day that all British men lost.

“It’s just a matter of time” – Broady confident British tennis will perform at Wimbledon

Explaining his seemingly misplaced optimism, Liam Broady justified his assertion:

“Obviously with Jack [Draper] not playing, I think that’s such a shame because I think he could have done really well this year. He’s improving all the time. I think he’s going to have a breakout Wimbledon at some point. It’s just a matter of time.”

Britain’s Jack Draper has long been regarded as an up-and-coming star, but the 21-year-old has been injury-plagued so far across his brief career.

Broady also had positive words to say about the other Brits in the draw this year:

“I think Cam [Norrie] could have easily gone deep. Andy could have easily gone deep. Dan Evans, he’s a bit low on confidence at the moment, but he could have easily gone deep in the tournament.

“A couple wild cards, Fery, Loffhagen. Jan Choinski picking up his first win here. I think it’s in a pretty good state on the men’s side.”

Boulter the last Brit standing in singles

In the women’s draw, it’s also been tough going for home hopes.

Wildcards Harriet Dart, Katie Swan, Sonay Kartal, Heather Watson all lost in the first round, while Jodie Burrage made it through to the second round before losing a one-sided contest to 11th seed Daria Kasatkina.

Only Katie Boulter remains alive, having defeated Australia Daria Saville 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the first round and most recently beating Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 to gain a place in the third round.

However, Boulter will face a tough battle if her run is to continue, with third seed and defending champion Elena Rybakina up next.
