Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No. 21 seed, edged out American Madison Brengle 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7) to advance to the third round of Wimbledon.

In an incredibly tight encounter, the victory was sealed courtesy of just a couple of points as the match went to three consecutive tiebreaks.

Fighting from a set down, it was the Russian who emerged victorious and moves into the third round. This was the first ever three-tiebreaks women’s singles match at Wimbledon and only the fourth in any Grand Slam in the Open Era.

Alexandrova, ranked No 22, will face Hungarian Dalma Galfi next.

This victory comes after Alexandrova’s title triumph at the Libema Open in the Netherlands last month, as the Russian continues to prove her grass-court pedigree.

The Russian defeated American Emma Navarro (6-4, 6-3) in the previous round of The Championships.

In the previous round of The Championships, Brengle, ranked No 114, won against Italian Sara Errani (6-3, 6-1).
