Italian Matteo Berrettini moved into the last 16 of Wimbledon by defeating German Alexander Zverev, the No 19 seed, 6-3, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Saturday evening.

The win sees Berrettini continue his impressive streak at Wimbledon 2023, a tournament where he made the final in 2021.

Ahead of this week, Matteo Berrettini had low expectations heading into Wimbledon. The big-hitting 27-year-old has been a force on grass over the past three years, but with an injury-plagued 2023 so far, has had very little time on the court. After losing in the Australian Open, Berrettini missed two months of play, before also withdrawing from Roland-Garros and queens due to a reoccurring abdominal injury.

However, the grass of Wimbledon has been kind to Berrettini so far, with the Italian beating compatriot Lorenzo Sonego 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (7), 6-3 in the first round, before dispatching Australian Alex De Minaur, the No 15 seed 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the second.

Alexander Zverev was Berrettini’s toughest opponent so far, with the former world No 2 a favourite to make a deep run at Wimbledon. Berrettini was not phased, however, and maintained a strong 36-22 winner to unforced error ratio as he defeated the No 19 seed in straight sets. The Italian won a dominant 86% of his first serves, landing 15 aces in a serve-oriented match.

Up next is an even greater challenge for Berrettini, with Carlos Alcaraz, the top seed, next.
