Pole Iga Swiatek, the No 8 seed, advanced to the third round of Wimbledon by winning against American Caty McNally 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Thursday afternoon.

Swiatek has not lost before the third round of a Grand Slam since the 2019 US Open. That makes it 22 consecutive Slams, placing her as the third woman this century to pass that milestone, joining Amelie Mauresmo and Serena Williams.

She has now won her last 13 meetings against opponents ranked outside the top 200. However, this was the first time she had needed three sets at a Grand Slam to beat a non-top-200 player. The Pole was far from perfect – spraying 36 unforced errors over the course of the two-hour, 25-minute match.

“I lost my intensity. I lost the quality, did some unforced errors, let her back in the game,” Swiatek reflected afterwards, referring to her drop in the opening set after racing out to a 3-0 lead.

Swiatek, ranked No 4, will play American Danielle Collins next.

The Pole defeated Russian Polina Kudermetova (7-5, 6-1) ahead of her victory.

In the previous round of The Championships, McNally, ranked No 208, beat wildcard Jodie Burrage (6-3, 6-1).
