Pole Iga Swiatek, the No 8 seed, won against Dane Clara Tauson, the No 23 seed, 6-4, 6-1 to move into the last eight of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Monday evening.

The former world No 1 enters her second quarter-final at SW19, after having done so back in 2023 – losing to Elina Svitolina.

Swiatek won an astonishing 92 percent of her first serve points and an admirable 60 percent of those on her second serve.

“Even with some double faults, I fought well, I’m not sure Clara felt well,” commented the former world No 1.

“She said at the net that she was sick, so hopefully she has a good recovery, a fast one. Overall, it’s never easy to keep your focus, sometimes when I thought I wasn’t feeling well I would just let go of everything and sometimes it gives you a boost [suddenly], so I was just trying to be ready for anything.

“Honestly, it’s pretty amazing, it’s is the first time I really enjoyed London. We’re tennis players – we feel good off the court when we feel good on the court. This year, I feel like I can just play my game and, hopefully, it can just last as long as possible and just keep working.”

Swiatek, ranked No 4, will face Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 19 seed, next.

The Pole beat American Danielle Collins (6-2, 6-3), American Catherine McNally (5-7, 6-2, 6-1) and Russian Polina Kudermetova (7-5, 6-1) ahead of her victory.

In the previous rounds of The Championships, Tauson, ranked No 22, won against Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 11 seed (7-6 (6), 6-3), Russian Anna Kalinskaya (6-3, 7-6 (10)) and English wildcard Heather Watson (2-6, 6-4, 6-3).
