Wimbledon wildcards announced: British youth in, French Open hero Boisson out
Wimbledon’s first wildcard selections favour six British women— including teenagers Hannah Klugman, Mika Stojsavljevic, and Mingge Xu—alongside two-time champion Petra Kvitová, while French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson is notably left out

The All England Club unveiled its first round of wildcards for this year’s Wimbledon Championships, offering opportunity to a wave of rising British talents and veteran favourites. Yet the decision not to extend an invitation to French Open semi-finalist Lois Boisson will still spark debate in tennis circles as she is now No 67 at the WTA rankings.
That would be enough for a direct entry spot but the cut-off date for Wimbledon came just before the French Open, six weeks ahead of the Championships.
The All England Club preferred to award a wildcard to Petra Kvitová, champion in 2011 and 2014, currently ranked outside the top 500 after maternity leave. She 1-6 this season on the WTA Tour.
The women’s wildcard list includes six British players: Jodie Burrage, Harriet Dart, Francesca Jones, and teenagers Hannah Klugman (16), Mika Stojsavljevic (16), and Mingge Xu (17).

Xu, currently on a hot streak, recently stunned top-100 players Alycia Parks and Katie Volynets in ITF events — while Klugman and Stojsavljevic have been dominant on the junior circuit, Klugman reaching the final of Roland-Garros in the category two weeks ago.
On the men’s side, all seven announced wildcards went to British players, including former world No. 21 Dan Evans, along with Jay Clarke, George Loffhagen, and promising college standouts like Jack Pinnington Jones.
One wildcard is pending on the men’s side. Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka can still hope to receive it. The 40-year-old Swiss, a former world No 3 who won the 2014 Australian Open, the 2015 French Open and the 2016 US Open, is currently ranked 155th. He was a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2015.
Wimbledon will start on June 30.
