Alexandrova maintains winning streak to reach last eight in Qatar

Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova took her winning streak to seven matches as she beat Belgian Elise Mertens 6-4, 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha on Wednesday.
Alexandrova, the winner in Linz and now ranked No 26, will face American Jessica Pegula, the No 6 seed, next.
The Russian won against wildcard Emma Raducanu (6-3, 7-5) and edged out Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed (3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Qatar tournament, Mertens, ranked No 32, benefited from the abandonment of Dane Clara Tauson (6-0) and beat Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa (6-2, 6-3).
