Austin Open: Sevastova into semi-finals

Latvian Anastasija Sevastova won against Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-4, 2-1 to advance to the semi-finals of the Austin Open at the Westwood Country Club on Friday night.

Sevastova, ranked No 485, will face the winner of the match between No 8 seed Yue Yuan and Yafan Wang next.

The 33-year-old Latvian beat Argentinian Julia Riera (6-4, 6-3) and American Sloane Stephens, the second seed (6-3, 6-2) ahead of her victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Schmiedlova, ranked No 76, edged out American Peyton Stearns, the No 7 seed (6-2, 4-6, 7-5) and American qualifier Sachia Vickery (5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-5).
