Czech Karolina Muchova, the No 11 seed, edged out Kazakh Elena Rybakina, the No 3 seed, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the Brisbane International presented by ANZ on Friday.
Muchova, ranked No 20, will play Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, next.
“It was such a close match today, Muchova said. It could go either way, I think, but I’m happy I managed, especially the end of the match, it’s something that I was struggling with end of the season to close out matches on my serve.”
“It worked these latest matches, so I’m pleased with that. Especially first tournament of season, you kind of never know what to expect, how you’re going to come out, how others are prepared. I’m just happy. Yeah, so far I’m feeling good on court.”
Ahead of her victory, the Czech won against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 7 seed (6-4, 7-5) and edged out Australian wildcard Ajla Tomljanovic (4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (5)).
“Honestly, couldn’t be better, Muchova said. Played three matches, two against top-10 players. It’s a way to start a year, and it’s great to have this experience on the court, so I’m very pleased.”
Rybakina, ranked No 5, defeated Spaniard Paula Badosa, the No 15 seed (6-3, 6-2) and Chinese qualifier Shuai Zhang (6-3, 7-5) earlier in the tournament.
