American Amanda Anisimova, the second seed, defeated Australian wildcard Kimberly Birrell 6-1, 6-3 to move into the last 16 of the Brisbane International presented by ANZ on Wednesday.

Anisimova, ranked No 3, will face Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the No 16 seed, next.

Birrell, ranked No 106, won against Slovak qualifier Rebecca Sramkova (6-4, 3-6, 6-3) in the previous round.
