Canadian Open: Gauff books spot in last 16 after a slow start against Kudermetova

Coco Gauff beat Veronika Kudermetova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 on Thursday. She’ll play the winner of the match between Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko and Czech Marie Bouzkova in the next round

American Coco Gauff, the top seed, moved into the last 16 of the Canadian Open by winning against Russian Veronika Kudermetova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 at the IGA Stadium in Montreal on Thursday.

Kudermetova has lead 6-4, 3-1, 30-40 on Gauff’s serve before Roland-Garros’ winner comeback.

Gauff, ranked No 2, will face the winner of the match between Canadian wildcard Victoria Mboko and Czech Marie Bouzkova next.

The 21-year-old American edged out Danielle Collins (7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (2)) ahead of her victory.

Kudermetova, ranked No 39, defeated Serb Olga Danilovic, the No 29 seed (6-4, 6-2) and edged out Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa (5-7, 6-2, 7-5).
