Italian Jasmine Paolini reached the last 16 of the Canadian Open after American Madison Keys, the No 13 seed, withdrew before the match on Thursday night at Stade IGA in Montreal.
Paolini, ranked No 49, will play American Jessica Pegula, the No 4 seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the Italian beat Croat Donna Vekic (7-6 (3), 6-2).
Keys, ranked No 15, won against wildcard Venus Williams (6-2, 7-5) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.
