Canadian Open: Swiatek defeats Muchova, nine hours after starting

Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed, edged out No 14 seed Karolina Muchova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the last eight of the Canadian Open at Stade IGA in Montreal on Thursday night.

Despite only playing for two hours and 47 minutes, this was a match that took more than nine hours to complete, courtesy of the Montreal rain. However, Swiatek was able to hold her focus across the day, winning in three sets against the 14th seed.

With the win, the 22-year-old also secures her No 1 ranking next week, ensuring she’ll spent a 72nd consecutive week atop the women’s rankings.

Swiatek, ranked No 1, will play the winner of the match between Canadian wildcard Leylah Fernandez and American qualifier Danielle Collins next.

The 22-year-old Pole won against Karolina Pliskova (7-6 (6), 6-2) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.

In the previous rounds of the Rogers Cup, Muchova, ranked No 17, beat Russian Anastasia Potapova (7-6 (4), 6-2) and Romanian Sorana Cirstea (7-5, 6-4).
