Charleston Open: Collins keeps title defence on track

Danielle Collins beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday and will play the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, the top seed, and Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the next round

American Danielle Collins, the No 7 seed, reached the quarter-finals of the Charleston Open by defeating Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 11 seed, 7-5, 6-3 at the Family Circle Tennis Center on Thursday.

Collins, ranked No 22, will play the winner of the match between American Jessica Pegula, the top seed, and Australian Ajla Tomljanovic next.

The American won against Robin Montgomery (6-3, 6-1) ahead of her victory.

In the previous round of the Charleston tournament, Ostapenko, ranked No 25, won against American qualifier Louisa Chirico (7-5, 6-2).
