Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 13 seed, won against German qualifier Eva Lys 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 to move into the 32 of the China Open.
Ostapenko, ranked No 16, will play the winner of the match between Chinese wildcard Fangran Tian and Linda Noskova next.
