Chinese Xinyu Wang won against Russian Daria Kasatkina, the No 11 seed, 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the last 16 of the China Open on Tuesday.
Wang, ranked No 37, will face the winner of the match between Greek Maria Sakkari, the No 6 seed, and Linda Fruhvirtova next.
In the previous round, the 22-year-old Chinese beat Russian wildcard Vera Zvonareva (6-4, 6-3).
Kasatkina, ranked No 13, edged out Egyptian Mayar Sherif (1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8)) in the previous round.
