Wildcard Sofia Kenin beat qualifier Dalayna Hewitt 6-4, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Tennis in the Land at Cleveland’s iconic Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica in Flats West Bank on Monday evening.
Kenin, ranked No 415, will play Romanian Irina-Camelia Begu, the No 5 seed, next.
The former world No 4 has struggled with injuries and form in 2022. She had dropped nine straight decisions after reaching the quarter-finals in Adelaide earlier in January, and her ranking has plummeted from 12 to 415.
