Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya won against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 9 seed, 6-4, 7-5 to reach the quarter-finals of the Dubai Open at The Aviation Club Tennis Centre on Wednesday.
Kalinskaya, ranked No 40, will face the winner of the match between American Coco Gauff, the No 3 seed, and Karolina Pliskova next.
Earlier in the tournament, the Russian defeated Australian qualifier Storm Hunter (6-1, 6-2) and Spanish lucky loser Cristina Bucsa (6-3, 6-4).
Ostapenko, ranked No 9, won against Chinese qualifier Xiyu Wang (5-7, 6-2, 6-3) and Swiss wildcard Lulu Sun (6-4, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Dubai tournament.
