Italian Sara Errani, the No 6 seed, reached the last four of the Firenze Ladies Open when Canadian Eugenie Bouchard retired on Friday evening.
Errani, ranked No 78, led 6-3, 1-0 when Bouchard, ranked No 233, pulled out on Friday evening.
The 36-year-old Italian will play the winner of the match between Italian wildcard Matilde Paoletti and American Taylor Townsend next.
Sara Errani beat wildcard Lisa Pigato (7-5, 6-0) and Indian qualifier Ankita Raina (3-6, 6-3, 6-3) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds, the Canadian won against Italian wildcard Diletta Cherubini (6-4, 6-4) and Slovenian Kaja Juvan (7-6 (6), 6-3).
