Chinese Xiyu Wang won against Russian Diana Shnaider 6-4, 7-5 to move into the last eight of the Galaxy Holding Group Guangzhou Open on Wednesday.
Wang, ranked No 88, will face the winner of the match between Chinese wildcard Yue Yuan and Slovak lucky loser Viktoria Hruncakova next.
The 22-year-old Chinese defeated Argentinian Nadia Podoroska (6-3, 6-3) ahead of her victory.
In the previous round, Shnaider, ranked No 83, beat American Claire Liu, the No 8 seed (6-1, 6-3).
