Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia, the No 5 seed, beat Romanian Ana Bogdan 6-4, 6-1 to win the Poland Open trophy the red clay of Warsaw on Sunday.

The 28-year-old completed her title run after toppling top-seeded Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals to become the first Frenchwoman to win against the WTA’s reigning No 1 on clay since 2005. The victory was also Garcia’s first victory over the tour’s No 1-ranked player, and her first top-10 win since the 2020 US Open.

Garcia, who won the Roland-Garros doubles crown with Kristina Mladenovic, improves to 27-14 in singles on the season by claiming her ninth title, and second of 2022 (also Bad Homburg).

It was worth a classic celebration.

Garcia converted five of seven break point opportunities, and won seven of the final eight games to lock down her triumph in one hour and 24 minutes.

After opening a 3-0 lead in the first set, Bogdan rallied to get back on serve at 4-5, but was broken while serving to stay in the set.

From there Garcia was dominant, breaking for 3-1 and 5-1 in the second set before converting her first match point in the next game as the rain started to fall in Warsaw.

Garcia, ranked No 45, defeated Japanese Misaki Doi (7-5, 6-4), Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto (6-3, 7-5), Pole Iga Swiatek, the top seed (6-1, 1-6, 6-4) and Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 10 seed (6-1, 6-2) ahead of her victory.

Earlier in the tournament, Bogdan, ranked No 108, defeated Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz, the No 7 seed (6-4, 7-6 (3)), Czech Katerina Siniakova (6-0, 6-4), Brazilian lucky loser Laura Pigossi (6-1, 6-1) and Ukrainian lucky loser Kateryna Baindl (7-5, 7-5).
