Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama moved into the quarter-finals of the Golden Gate Open at Stanford by winning against Swede Rebecca Peterson, the No 7 seed, 6-3, 6-2 on Tuesday evening.

The win sees Hontama continue her impressive run, having won her spot in the Golden Gate Open at Stanford main draw through qualifying.

Hontama, ranked No 183, will face the winner of the match between German Tamara Korpatsch, the top seed, and Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang next. The Japanese player beat Australian Kimberly Birrell (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) ahead of her victory.

In the previous round, Peterson, ranked No 86, defeated American Ashlyn Krueger (7-6 (5), 7-5).
