Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang advanced to the last four of the Golden Gate Open at Stanford by defeating Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama 6-3, 6-3 on Friday night.
Wang, ranked No 158, will face Japanese Moyuka Uchijima next.
In the previous rounds, the Chinese won against Ukrainian Daria Snigur (1-6, 6-2, 6-1) and German Tamara Korpatsch, the top seed (6-1, 7-5).
Hontama, ranked No 183, beat Australian Kimberly Birrell (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Swede Rebecca Peterson, the No 7 seed (6-3, 6-2) earlier in the tournament.
