Hungarian Open: Liu makes last four, beats eighth seed Schmiedlova

American Claire Liu reached the last four of the Hungarian Open by defeating Slovak Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, the No 8 seed, 7-5, 6-4 at Római Tennis Academy in Budapest on Friday afternoon.
Liu, ranked No 88, will face the winner of the match between Hungarian wildcard Fanny Stollar and Ukrainian Kateryna Baindl next.
Earlier in the tournament, the American won against qualifier Louisa Chirico (6-4, 6-4) and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva, the No 4 seed (6-3, 7-6 (8)).
Schmiedlova, ranked No 83, beat Russian Polina Kudermetova (6-2, 6-0) and German Tamara Korpatsch (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) in the previous rounds of the Budapest tournament.
