Russian Liudmila Samsonova, the No 24 seed, moved into the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells WTA 1000 by beating Italian Jasmine Paolini, the No 6 seed, 6-0, 6-4 in California on Wednesday.
Samsonova, ranked No 25, will face Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, next.
Ahead of her victory, the Russian won against American Catherine McNally (7-6 (8), 6-4) and No 12 seed Daria Kasatkina (2-6, 6-3, 6-2).
Paolini, ranked No 6, defeated American wildcard Iva Jovic (7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-3) and edged out Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (6-4, 3-6, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the Indian Wells tournament.
