Japan’s Sonobe earns first WTA Tour win on debut in Abu Dhabi
Wakana Sonobe defeated Yue Yuan 6-4, 6-3 on Monday and will play the winner of the match between Tunisian Ons Jabeur and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 7 seed, in the next round
Japanese qualifier Wakana Sonobe earned her first ever WTA Tour victory on Monday when she beat Yue Yuan of China 6-4, 6-3 to reach the last 16 of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open presented by Abu Dhabi Sports Council.
The 17-year-old, who won the girls’ title at the Australian Open just over a week ago, will now play either Tunisian Ons Jabeur and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, the No 7 seed.
