Second seed Elisabetta Cocciaretto won her maiden WTA title in Lausanne, beating world No 84 Clara Burel 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

It took her two hours and 43 minutes to take the crown, finishing off her debut in Switzerland – a week in which she won two matches from match point down.

She is the ninth first-time title winner on the WTA Tour this year, joining Zhu Lin, Alycia Parks, Marta Kostyuk, Lucia Bronzetti, Katie Boulter, Qinwen Zheng, Maria Timofeeva and Arantxa Rus.

The Italian had finished as runner-up in Hobart earlier in the year, losing to Lauren Davis; that was her first ever singles final.

Burel too was seeking a maiden title, and had previously reached the final at this tournament, back in 2021 when she lost to Tamara Zidansek.

The Frenchwoman has never yet beaten an Italian in her singles career on tour.
