Japanese Moyuka Uchijima won against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, the No 21 seed, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance to the last eight of the Madrid Open at the Caja Mágica.
Uchijima, ranked No 56, will play Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, the No 17 seed, next.
The Japanese defeated American wildcard Robin Montgomery (1-6, 6-4, 6-3), Tunisian Ons Jabeur, the No 26 seed (4-6, 6-3, 6-4) and American Jessica Pegula, the No 3 seed (6-3, 6-2) ahead of her victory.
In the previous rounds of the Madrid tournament, Alexandrova, ranked No 22, beat Serb Olga Danilovic (6-3, 6-4) and Australian Daria Kasatkina, the No 14 seed (6-3, 7-6 (3)).
